The DV5 1.5 BlueHDi in Peugeot Partner vans

The DV5 engine is the 1.5 BlueHDi fitted to the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, Vauxhall Vivaro and Combo, Toyota Proace City and, as the 1.5 EcoBlue, the Ford Transit Connect from 2018 to 2021 — as well as to a number of passenger cars. Outputs run from 75hp to 130hp.

The DV5 uses a dry timing belt and a timing chain. Every DV5 we rebuild gets a new timing belt kit and the upgraded 8mm timing chain (early engines used a 7mm chain).

The other thing to know about the DV5 is how hard it is on its oil. It is a small, hot-running aluminium engine, and when oil changes are left too long the oil breaks down into a thick sludge that blocks the oil ways — so oil condition and service intervals matter more on this engine than on almost anything else we handle.

At £1,800 plus VAT on exchange it is, alongside the R9M, the most affordable engine in our range — which matters, because small vans are frequently written off commercially by an engine bill that exceeds the vehicle's trade value.

Oil sludge and the timing chain: why servicing history matters here

The DV5 uses a dry timing belt and a timing chain. Every DV5 we rebuild gets a new timing belt kit and the upgraded 8mm timing chain (early engines used a 7mm chain). The chain is the part to watch: the DV5 uses the same valve springs as the larger DW10, which drives them with a 12mm-wide timing drive. Add oil that sludges when changes are left late, and the chain, bearings and turbo are the first things to suffer.

If you are buying a reconditioned DV5, ask what the rebuild includes. Ours get the new timing belt kit and the 8mm chain as standard, along with a new oil pump — the whole point of the rebuild is that the timing and lubrication systems leave us in new condition.

The rebuild

What we replace on every DV5 1.5 BlueHDi

Every unit is stripped to bare block. Nothing goes back on unless it measures inside OE tolerance. What follows is specific to this engine — a chain-driven unit and a belt-driven unit do not need the same work.

Block decked and honed back to the 1,499 cc OE bore
New piston rings. Pistons are measured and replaced where they fall outside OE tolerance

Six months supply-only, twelve months fitted

The 12-month warranty applies when the engine is fitted by us. Supply-only units carry six months and must be installed by a VAT-registered garage or qualified mechanic.

Signs a 1.5 BlueHDi needs replacing

On the DV5, anything suggesting sludged oil or a stretched timing chain deserves immediate attention rather than monitoring:

Oil pressure warning light at any point, even briefly — stop driving and get it looked at
Rattle from the timing end on start-up, or a change in engine note after an oil change was missed
Thick, dark or jelly-like oil on the dipstick or filler cap, or oil noticeably low between services
Knocking from the bottom end, particularly under load
Blue smoke and rising oil consumption
A previous timing chain or belt failure, or sludge found in the sump or oil pickup
