The Transit 2.0 EcoBlue in Ford Transit MK8 vans

The 2.0 EcoBlue replaced the old Duratorq in the Transit range from 2016 and now covers the MK8 panel van, the Transit Custom and the Tourneo Custom, in 105, 130 and 170hp outputs. It is a belt-driven common-rail unit built to Euro 6.

The EcoBlue is the engine we are asked about most often, simply because there are more Transits on British roads than anything else in the sector. That also means the widest spread of codes: the FWD and RWD families are distinct, and Ford used a long list of three- and four-letter codes across the run.

For an operator, the case for reconditioning a Transit is usually straightforward. A sound MK8 body with a tidy interior and a fresh engine is worth considerably more as a working van than it is as a trade-in against a replacement.

Get the variant right

Front-wheel or rear-wheel drive? Check the letter code

Transit EcoBlue codes are letter-based and split by driveline. Front-wheel-drive units run YLF6, YLFA, YLFB, YLFS, YMF6, YMFA, YMFB, YMFS, YNF6, YNFA, YNFS, BJFA, BJFB, BKFA, BKFB, BLFA and BLFB.

Rear-wheel-drive units run YMR6, YMFS, BCFB, BKFA, BKFB and BLFB. A handful of codes appear on both lists, which is exactly why we confirm against your VIN rather than the code alone.

The Transit Custom and the full-size MK8 also differ in ancillaries even where the core engine matches. Send the registration and we will work it out from the VIN.

The rebuild

What we replace on every Transit 2.0 EcoBlue

Every unit is stripped to bare block. Nothing goes back on unless it measures inside OE tolerance. What follows is specific to this engine — a chain-driven unit and a belt-driven unit do not need the same work.

Bottom end

  • Block decked and honed back to the 1,995 cc OE bore
  • New piston rings. Pistons are measured and replaced where they fall outside OE tolerance
  • Crankshaft reground and magna-fluxed to check for cracks
  • New main and big-end bearings set to OE clearance
  • New front and rear crankshaft seals

Cylinder head

  • Head pressure tested and skimmed to OE flatness
  • Valves inspected and lapped, new valve stem seals
  • New camshaft bearings
  • OE multi-layer steel head gasket
  • Injector seats cleaned and checked for sealing

Timing and lubrication

  • New timing belt kit — belt, tensioner and idlers, replaced as a set
  • New oil pump and pickup
  • New water pump
  • Oil galleries cleaned through before assembly
  • Full inspection before the engine leaves us

Six months supply-only, twelve months fitted

The 12-month warranty applies when the engine is fitted by us. Supply-only units carry six months and must be installed by a VAT-registered garage or qualified mechanic.

Two conditions before you buy: change the oil and filter at 500 miles, then every 6,000 miles at most, keeping the receipts — and sort the cooling system when the engine goes in. Those two account for almost every refused claim. The full terms set out the rest.

Repair or replace

Signs a Transit EcoBlue needs replacing

The EcoBlue is belt-driven, and belt-driven diesels give fairly clear warnings before the bottom end lets go:

  • A rattle on start-up that settles after a few seconds and gradually gets longer over weeks
  • Oil pressure light flickering at idle, particularly when hot
  • Low or uneven compression across cylinders on a test
  • Heavy blue smoke on overrun or under hard acceleration
  • Debris or sludge visible in the sump when the oil is dropped
  • Coolant loss with no external leak, or exhaust gases showing in the coolant

Not sure which of these you have? Describe it to us on the phone — we would rather tell you it is a repair than sell you an engine you do not need. More on this in our questions answered.

Common questions

Transit 2.0 EcoBlue questions

How much does a reconditioned Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue engine cost?
A reconditioned EcoBlue on an exchange basis is £2,000 plus VAT, delivered on a pallet to mainland UK. Recovery with fitting is £3,300 plus VAT all-in within roughly 60 miles of Swanscombe. Supply and fit at our workshop is quoted per van, because Custom and MK8 labour times differ.
Will a Transit Custom engine fit a full-size Transit MK8?
Sometimes, but not reliably on the model name alone. The Custom and the MK8 share the EcoBlue family, but driveline, output and ancillary differences mean the codes have to match. We check the engine code against your VIN before anything is dispatched.
Is the EcoBlue engine belt-driven?
Yes, the 2.0 EcoBlue is belt-driven. A new timing belt kit is fitted as part of every rebuild, so the belt, tensioner and associated parts are new when the engine leaves our workshop.
